Boston to Seattle in 110 hours

I have finally booked my dream trip - across America by train - and I am going to happily share the details of my trip with all of you.  My trip starts in Wells, Maine and I will travel on four different trains and through many states before reaching my destination of Seattle, Washington over 5 whole days after departure.

The trains and the routes I will be taking are:

Wells, Maine to Boston, Massachuestts: the Downeaster

Boston, Mass to Chicago, IL: the Lake Shore Limited

Chicago, IL to Los Angeles, CA: The Southwest Chief

Los Angeles, CA to Seattle, WA: The Coast Starlight

I leave in just under two weeks and can't wait!

  1. My son Kai LOVES trains. He is seriously obsessed and knows ridiculously more about them than I do at this point. Would you be willing to post pics of the trains you ride themselves? I bet Kai would love to follow along with your adventure! Such a neat idea!

  3. Trains have so much more TRADITION than planes. 180 years in American train lore. One thing I'm wondering is how the track condition on each leg is. The Empire Builder in North Dakota and Montana was pretty bouncy. I'd hate to have motion sickness on that stretch. Happily, my balance is near-perfect, so the only time I minded was when I was drawing water in my travel bottle and almost crashed onto the guy behind me. Learned better how to negotiate that particular item.

  4. Hey! Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Seattle by train. I am glad to stop by your site and know more about Seattle by train. Keep it up! This is a good read. I will be looking forward to visit your page again and for your other posts as well.
The Tacoma Link cars were manufactured in the Czech Republic by Škoda in 2001-2, under a partnership with Inekon, another Czech company. The three cars are model 10T, the same type used by the Portland Streetcar (the latter's cars 001-007). They were delivered to Sound Transit in September 2002, prior to the 2003 opening of Tacoma Link. They typically operate as single cars (not coupled in trains), and are 66 feet long, 8 feet wide, and have two articulations in the middle. They have a total capacity for 157 people, with 30 seated and 127 standing. The cars draw their power from 750-volt overhead wires.
